Prefer python3-pychess_*.deb from GitHub Releases when you want the same tag as the Windows MSI. Distro apt packages may exist and may lag.
Steps
- Open the current tag on PyChess releases.
- Download
python3-pychess_*.deb. - Install with your package tool, for example
sudo apt install ./python3-pychess_*.deb. That command remains UNVERIFIED on a real machine here. - Launch PyChess from the desktop menu and prove one local game.
GTK and related GObject packages are listed in upstream INSTALL. If the window fails to start, read INSTALL rather than grabbing a renamed portal copy.
After install
First hour: installed. rpm path: rpm. Source: source.
Write .deb on the machine ticket so the next bump does not mix a distro package with the GitHub file. Club images drift when two packages own one user.
What this path is for
This Linux path is for local chess work on a GTK desktop. It is not a Snap store ranking page and it is not a website signup. Leave browser boards for rated pools if you want them.
Rank Timber maps the filename. Upstream remains GPL-3.0 at pychess/pychess. Related: download safe and releases.
Shared labs should pin the .deb name beside the OS version. After a reimage, prove one short game before calling the desk ready. Update from the same door: update uninstall.
Lab notes for Debian desks
Classroom images should pin the .deb filename beside the Ubuntu version. After a reimage, install the GitHub file again instead of hoping the distro pocket caught up. Distro packages are useful, yet they often lag the tag that Windows desks already use.
If GTK libraries are missing, read INSTALL rather than downloading a second archive from a ranking page. Upstream lists python3-gi, GTK, and related packages. Those apt lines remain UNVERIFIED here.
Shared /home folders should keep PGN files outside the package tree so an uninstall does not wipe club games. Write the folder on the ticket.
Wayland and X11 both can host a GTK window. This guide does not pick a session for you. Prove a game in the session the machine already uses.
Related reading stays on rpm, source, and installed. Rank Timber maps the .deb door. Upstream remains GPL-3.0 at pychess/pychess.
Shared-machine rhythm
Write the installer class on the ticket beside the OS version. After every reimage, take that same class from GitHub Releases, launch the GTK window, and replay one saved PGN. That three-step loop catches vanished packages and portal shortcuts that reappear from old bookmarks.
Keep engine binaries on a documented path. Keep the PGN folder off the package tree so uninstalls do not wipe club history. Keep website bookmarks if rated pools still matter, and keep them labelled as a different job.
Rank Timber publishes the install map. Upstream remains at pychess.github.io. Related doors stay under guides, releases, and installed.
Frequently asked questions
Is this chess guide free to follow?
Yes. Rank Timber publishes install steps without a paywall so anyone can follow the chess path. PyChess itself ships under GPL-3.0. Website billing stays your responsibility and is separate from the program licence. Extra engines such as Stockfish keep their own licences when you install them beside the client.
Where should I download the Linux chess setup?
Prefer GitHub Releases for pychess/pychess when you want named chess assets. Take pychess-*-mingw_x86_64_msvcrt_gnu.msi on Windows or python3-pychess_*.deb on Linux. Keep Softonic-style mirrors out of the loop. Document the update door on the machine ticket so the next bump stays honest for shared desks.
Does the chess client work offline after install?
After the first download, PyChess can play and analyze offline with the built-in engine and any engine already on disk. You still need network for the first MSI or .deb fetch, and for optional FICS or ICC later. A desk install does not require a website account before the first game.
