Files and engines are why a local chess client exists. Prove a game first, then wire the extras. First run: first run.
Files
PGN holds games. EPD and FEN hold positions. Put the folder on the machine ticket. Shared desks lose hours when last month’s club games sit in Downloads.
Engines
Upstream feature notes list UCI and CECP support, eight difficulty levels, a built-in engine, an opening book, and Hint Mode arrows. Install Stockfish or another engine as its own package. This guide does not ship engines inside the MSI name.
Variants
Upstream lists many variants, including Atomic, Crazyhouse, Fischer Random, and others. Try variants after the standard board works. A first-hour failure is usually a bad installer, not a missing variant.
Related doors
Safety: is it safe. Switch: switch from online chess sites. Home: home.
Rank Timber maps files and engines without turning the page into a website funnel. Upstream remains GPL-3.0 at pychess/pychess. When you export from a website, you still need that site’s own export control.
Club images should include the engine binary policy beside the PyChess door. Mixing portable engines in random folders makes Hint Mode arrows point at nothing after a reimage. Updates: update uninstall.
Folder hygiene
Name the folder after the club or the year, not after the download. Put it on a disk you back up. Exports from websites land there. Games you play locally land there.
Do not keep the only copy inside Downloads. Browser downloads get purged. Shared profiles get wiped. A ticket line that says D:\Club\PGN saves a season.
Engine hygiene
One engine binary per documented path. Portable copies in random zip folders vanish after a reimage. Hint Mode then looks broken even though PyChess is fine.
UCI and CECP cover most popular engines. Upstream also mentions Windows engines such as Rybka when installed. This guide does not bundle those binaries.
Variants later
Fischer Random, Crazyhouse, Atomic, and the rest are listed on the features page. They are not a substitute for a clean installer. Prove standard play first.

Shared-machine rhythm
Write the installer class on the ticket beside the OS version. After every reimage, take that same class from GitHub Releases, launch the GTK window, and replay one saved PGN. That three-step loop catches vanished packages and portal shortcuts that reappear from old bookmarks.
Keep engine binaries on a documented path. Keep the PGN folder off the package tree so uninstalls do not wipe club history. Keep website bookmarks if rated pools still matter, and keep them labelled as a different job.
Rank Timber publishes the install map. Upstream remains at pychess.github.io. Related doors stay under guides, releases, and installed.
Frequently asked questions
Which chess file formats does PyChess open?
Upstream documents PGN, EPD, and FEN. Keep those files in a folder you control and back them up yourself. Website ratings do not live inside a PGN file. Export games from a website if you want them on disk, then open the file in PyChess.
Which chess engines work with PyChess?
PyChess has a built-in Python engine and talks to UCI and CECP engines, including popular names such as Stockfish, GnuChess, Crafty, Sjeng, and Fruit when those binaries are installed. Hint Mode arrows follow the analysis engine you choose in Preferences.
Does engine analysis need a website account?
No. Local engine analysis runs on your machine after the engine binary is present. A website analysis pack is a different product. This guide maps the desktop client, not a paid site tier.
